Maria Brown CERAMICIST
Drawing on many years of experience as an Art Teacher, Maria looks at the natural environment around her for inspiration in creating ceramic vessels and Totem sculptures. Driftwood and mangrove pods found on the beach become handles for pots, supported by shapes inspired by crab claws. The marks and patterns left in the sand by these crabs, and also the ebb and flow of the tide, influence the detailed incised patterns on the surface of her pots. Exploring the Wallum and high dunes near her home, with its diversity of flora such as Banksia and Grass trees, provides further visual stimulation.
